Bear, my 14-year-old, 10-pound rescue dog, may be small in size, but he’s a giant when it comes to life lessons. If you’ve spent any time in therapy with me, you’ve probably heard a story or two about him. Today, I’d like to share what Bear has taught me about letting go.
Lesson #1: Live in the Moment
Bear doesn’t dwell on the dog that barked at him yesterday or worry about the squirrel he might encounter tomorrow. He lives entirely in the now. When something excites or upsets him (like a dog passing by), he processes it, shakes it off—sometimes literally—and moves on. Imagine how freeing it would feel to let go of what we can’t control and focus on the present.
Lesson #2: Don’t Worry About What Others Think
Whether he’s walking with a bounce in his step or curling up on a pile of blankets, Bear is unapologetically himself. He’s not concerned with how others perceive him. What if we, too, could embrace our quirks and stop seeking approval from others?
Lesson #3: Simple Pleasures Are the Best
For Bear, happiness is a treat, a walk, or his favorite: a car ride. These simple joys bring him pure contentment. Maybe we don’t need to overcomplicate life to find our own happiness. What’s your equivalent of a car ride? Seek it out.
Lesson #4: Forgiveness Is a Gift
Bear may have had a difficult past, but he doesn’t hold onto it. He’s learned to trust and love again. His ability to forgive inspires me to encourage the same in therapy—letting go of old hurts to make space for growth.
Bear’s wisdom is a reminder that letting go isn’t about ignoring life’s challenges—it’s about accepting what is and finding peace despite the chaos. Let’s take a page out of his tiny but mighty book and live with a little more ease.
